1. What is PLE?
"Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are Web 2.0 and social media technologies that enable individual learners the ability to manage their own learning. Self-directed learning is explored as a foundation for the use of PLEs." (Haworth, 2016)
Haworth also outlined the optimal criteria for social media tools to be used as PLEs: "they must be easy to use, open, dynamic, and offer collaboration options."
2. Example of PLE
- Google account as a PLE (similar collection of the tools like o365)
- Blog as PLE
- Microblogging (e.g. Twitter) as PLE
- Image Sharing as a PLE

- Personal Website as a PLE
- Hard Drive or Cloud Storage as a PLE
- Social Bookmarking as a PLE

3. PLE and self-regulated learning
Level 1: Personal information management corresponds to the forethought phase where planning, goal-setting and information gathering can be conducted and recorded.
Level 2: Social interaction and collaboration corresponds to the performance phase where sharing and pooling of and peer feedback on gathered productions, resources and reflections are encouraged.
Level 3: Information aggregation and management corresponds to the self-reflection phase where information and current states of students' personal and shared profiles and resources is evaluated by the instructor and learners with the aim to refine and restructure information to align them with learning goals. Self-reflection guides the commencement of a new cycle.
